A fair question. Here is an honest answer.
With the self-hosted version, there is no trust required. You run the server on your own cloud account. We have no access to it. The app is open source and you can verify that it does not send anything anywhere. That is about as private as it gets.
The managed version is a different proposition. We run the server infrastructure on your behalf, which means you are trusting us the same way you would trust any VPN provider. The key difference is that the underlying code is fully open source. You can read exactly how the server is configured and what it does and does not log. We cannot make claims that contradict what the code says, because anyone can check.
The managed version exists for people who want the convenience of not managing cloud accounts but still want a dedicated IP address and the transparency that comes with open source infrastructure. If you have the technical setup to use the self-hosted version, that is the better choice for privacy. If you do not, the managed version is a meaningful step up from a closed-source commercial VPN.
